Alchornea cordifolia (commonly known as Christmas bush or African Christmas bush) is traditionally used in various African ethnomedicinal practices to treat cough and other respiratory complaints. Ethnobotanical surveys across West and Central Africa document the use of A. cordifolia leaves, bark, and roots in decoctions or infusions for alleviating cough, chest congestion, and symptoms of bronchitis. The plant is valued in traditional medicine not only for cough but also for malaria, wounds, and gastrointestinal issues.

While a few laboratory studies have identified antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in extracts from A. cordifolia, there is limited direct scientific investigation into its effectiveness specifically for cough. The available pharmacological research is largely preliminary, with some supporting activity against pathogens that might cause respiratory symptoms, but without strong clinical evidence for antitussive (cough-suppressing) effects in humans. Thus, its use for cough is largely justified by longstanding traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. Further studies, including clinical trials, would be necessary to substantiate its efficacy and safety for this indication.
