Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

White Lily (Lilium candidum) has been traditionally used in various herbal medicine systems, particularly in Europe and parts of Asia, as a remedy for respiratory ailments, including dry coughs. Historical records and herbal compendia from the 18th and 19th centuries mention the use of lily bulbs and flowers in the preparation of syrups, infusions, or poultices aimed at soothing the throat and alleviating cough. Such use appears to be based largely on the mucilaginous properties attributed to the bulb, which may provide a mild demulcent effect and help relieve throat irritation. However, modern scientific studies specifically investigating the efficacy of White Lily for dry cough are lacking. There are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological data validating its use for this purpose. Consequently, while its application for dry cough persists in some folk and traditional remedies, the evidence supporting this is limited to anecdotal and historical reports rather than modern scientific validation.
