Rating (out of 5): 2

Sundew (Drosera spp.) has been used traditionally in Europe as a remedy for respiratory conditions, particularly dry (non-productive) cough. The use of sundew for cough is supported both by its long history in folk medicine and by limited scientific research. The plant contains compounds such as naphthoquinones (notably plumbagin and 7-methyljuglone), flavonoids, and phenolic acids, which are believed to contribute to its antitussive (cough-suppressing) and spasmolytic (muscle relaxant) effects. Several in vitro and animal studies have indicated that sundew extracts can inhibit cough reflex and relax bronchial smooth muscle, potentially easing dry cough symptoms. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and evidence for efficacy relies largely on preclinical research and traditional use. The German Commission E, which evaluates herbal medicines, recognizes sundew as a traditional herbal medicinal product for supporting the relief of dry, irritative coughs. Overall, while scientific evidence is still limited and not of the highest quality, there is a moderate basis for its use derived from both pharmacological studies and longstanding traditional application.
