Osmanthus (Osmanthus fragrans) flowers have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where they are known as "Gui Hua." In TCM, Osmanthus is traditionally used to treat dry coughs, especially those associated with dryness in the lungs or throat. The flowers are thought to moisten dryness, disperse phlegm, and relieve cough, making them a common ingredient in herbal teas and syrups aimed at soothing respiratory discomfort. Historical texts and pharmacopeias, such as the "Compendium of Materia Medica" (Bencao Gangmu), reference Osmanthus for these purposes. However, modern scientific studies directly validating the efficacy of Osmanthus for dry cough are limited. Most available research focuses on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, which could theoretically support respiratory health but do not specifically confirm its effectiveness in treating cough. Therefore, its use for dry cough is primarily supported by traditional practices rather than robust clinical evidence. While some laboratory studies suggest bioactive compounds in Osmanthus may have beneficial effects, further clinical research is needed to substantiate its traditional use for dry cough.
