Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dioscorea nipponica, commonly known as Japanese yam or "Chuan Shan Long" in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. In TCM, Dioscorea nipponica is primarily used for its purported abilities to dispel wind-dampness, relieve pain, and promote blood circulation. However, it has also been utilized for certain respiratory complaints, including cough, especially when associated with dryness or stubbornness. The roots contain steroidal saponins, which are believed to have anti-inflammatory and expectorant effects, and some traditional formulas use Dioscorea nipponica as a minor ingredient in multi-herb prescriptions aimed at treating bronchitis or chronic cough.

Despite its mention in traditional practices, the direct evidence supporting Dioscorea nipponica as an effective remedy for dry cough is limited. Most modern pharmacological research on this herb has focused on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-arthritic properties, with relatively little attention to its effects on cough or respiratory tract health. There are a few animal studies suggesting anti-inflammatory action in the airways, but no robust clinical trials or comprehensive scientific reviews specifically validate its use for dry cough in humans. Thus, its application for this condition is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific evidence.
