Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cubebs (Piper cubeba), also known as tailed pepper, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, and traditional Chinese medicine. Historically, cubebs have been used for a variety of respiratory conditions, including coughs—particularly dry coughs. Traditional texts and herbal compendia describe cubebs as having expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help soothe irritated respiratory passages and facilitate the expulsion of mucus. However, the evidence supporting its efficacy for cough is largely anecdotal and based on traditional usage rather than modern clinical trials.
Scientific studies on cubebs are limited and have mostly focused on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. While these effects might theoretically provide some benefit for respiratory symptoms, direct clinical evidence for its use in treating dry cough is lacking. Therefore, its use for cough is primarily justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation. Overall, the strength of evidence is modest, reflecting its basis in historical practice rather than rigorously controlled studies.
