Chinese Pine (commonly referring to the pine needles or resin of Pinus tabuliformis or related species) has a traditional use in Chinese medicine for the treatment of dry cough. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), pine needles and resin are believed to have the effect of moistening the lungs, resolving phlegm, and relieving cough, especially when the cough is dry and associated with deficient lung yin. The medicinal use is documented in classic herbal texts such as the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu) and various regional pharmacopoeias. Pine products are often included in herbal formulas aimed at nourishing lung yin and alleviating cough. However, the evidence supporting these uses is primarily anecdotal and based on traditional practice rather than modern clinical trials or pharmacological studies. While pine needles contain volatile oils (such as pinene) and other bioactive compounds, there is very limited scientific research specifically investigating their efficacy for treating dry cough in humans. Therefore, while the use is well established within TCM, the scientific basis for efficacy remains weak and largely unproven.
