Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bermuda Grass (Cynodon dactylon) has been used traditionally in various systems of folk medicine, including Ayurveda and traditional practices in Africa and Asia, for a range of ailments. Its use for treating cough, particularly dry cough, is primarily rooted in traditional or folk medicine. Traditional healers sometimes administer Bermuda Grass juice or decoctions as a soothing agent for sore throats and coughs, based on its purported demulcent and mild anti-inflammatory properties. However, the scientific literature contains very limited evidence regarding its efficacy for cough. Most studies on Bermuda Grass focus on its antioxidant, antimicrobial, or wound-healing properties, rather than specific effects on the respiratory system or cough relief. There are no well-designed clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies that directly support the use of Bermuda Grass for dry cough. Therefore, while its use persists in some traditional medicine contexts, current scientific validation is lacking, and the evidence to support its effectiveness for this particular indication is weak.
