Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bael (Aegle marmelos) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. Its fruit, leaves, and roots have been used for a variety of ailments, including respiratory conditions like coughs. In Ayurvedic texts, Bael is often mentioned as part of formulations used to alleviate cough, particularly when associated with dryness or irritation. The mucilaginous properties of Bael pulp are believed to soothe irritated mucous membranes, potentially providing relief from dry coughs. Additionally, Bael is thought to have mild expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties according to traditional sources.

However, while its use for cough is rooted in tradition, there is limited scientific evidence to directly validate Bael’s efficacy for dry cough. Most modern research on Bael focuses on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and gastrointestinal effects, with only a few animal studies hinting at possible benefits for respiratory conditions. Thus, while traditional use is well-documented, current scientific validation remains insufficient, and the overall evidence supporting its use for dry cough is moderate based on tradition but weak from a scientific perspective.
