Evidence supporting the use of: Asarum heterotropoides
For the health condition: Cough (dry)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Asarum heterotropoides, commonly known as wild ginger or "Xi Xin" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use as an herbal remedy for respiratory conditions, including dry cough. TCM practitioners have used Asarum heterotropoides to "dispel wind-cold," "open nasal passages," and alleviate coughs, particularly those characterized as dry or with little phlegm. The recorded use of Asarum for cough dates back centuries in classic TCM texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and "Compendium of Materia Medica." The root contains volatile oils, including methyl eugenol and safrole, which are thought by traditional practitioners to contribute to its expectorant and antitussive properties.
Scientifically, there is limited modern research directly confirming its efficacy for dry cough in humans. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Asarum extracts may have anti-inflammatory and antitussive effects, but robust clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, the justification for its use in treating dry cough is primarily based on tradition, with moderate historical evidence but limited modern scientific validation. Additionally, safety concerns exist due to the presence of aristolochic acids, which can be nephrotoxic and carcinogenic, so its use is increasingly restricted or regulated in many countries.
