Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Terminalia species, particularly Terminalia chebula (Haritaki), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Siddha. In TCM, Terminalia chebula is classified as a herb that regulates qi and resolves phlegm, and is commonly included in formulas for coughs associated with "dampness" (phlegm retention). The fruit is believed to have expectorant and astringent properties, which can help alleviate productive cough and clear mucus from the respiratory tract. In Ayurveda, Haritaki is similarly used for respiratory complaints, including coughs with excessive mucus, due to its ability to balance kapha dosha (often linked to phlegm and dampness). While traditional texts and pharmacopeias document these uses extensively, scientific validation remains limited. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest Terminalia extracts possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild antimicrobial effects, which could theoretically benefit respiratory health. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials specifically evaluating Terminalia’s efficacy for cough characterized by dampness or phlegm retention in humans. Therefore, while the traditional basis is strong (hence a rating of 3), scientific support is preliminary and not definitive.
