Evidence supporting the use of: Reed Herb
For the health condition: Cough (damp)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Reed Herb (Phragmites communis, also known as Lu Gen in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a long history of use in traditional herbal systems, particularly in Chinese medicine. It is commonly used to clear heat and promote the generation of fluids, and is frequently included in formulas to address coughs associated with "damp-heat" or phlegm. The traditional rationale is that Reed Herb helps to moisten the lungs, clear heat, and transform phlegm, which can alleviate coughs resulting from these patterns. Historical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and subsequent materia medica describe its use for cough with yellow, sticky sputum or when cough is accompanied by fever and thirst.
There is, however, limited scientific evidence specifically validating the use of Reed Herb for coughs characterized as "damp" or for coughs in general. Some modern pharmacological studies indicate anti-inflammatory and antipyretic properties in extracts of Phragmites communis, but research on its effects on respiratory symptoms remains sparse and inconclusive. Therefore, the primary justification for its use in cough (damp) is traditional, and the strength of evidence is modest, deriving mainly from historical usage rather than rigorous clinical trials.
