Evidence supporting the use of: Mucolase
For the health condition: Cough (damp)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Mucolase is a mucolytic agent, commonly used in some Asian countries, particularly in traditional medicine settings, to treat coughs associated with thick, damp phlegm (often referred to as "damp cough" in Traditional Chinese Medicine terminology). The primary ingredient in Mucolase is often lysozyme or similar mucolytic enzymes, which are believed to help break down mucus and facilitate its expulsion. The use of such agents to support cough with phlegm is well-rooted in traditional medical practices, particularly in Japan and other East Asian countries. However, the scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of Mucolase for "damp cough" is limited and mostly consists of small clinical studies, anecdotal reports, or extrapolations from its mucolytic action in vitro. There are a few studies suggesting that mucolytic agents in general can help reduce sputum viscosity and improve expectoration, but these do not always specifically address Mucolase or the traditional concept of "damp cough." Thus, while the traditional use is well-established, robust clinical trials and high-quality scientific evidence are lacking, leading to a modest evidence rating.
