Bupleurum (most commonly Bupleurum chinense) is traditionally used in Chinese medicine, particularly in formulas for conditions involving what is termed "dampness" in the lungs, which may manifest as a cough with phlegm. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Bupleurum is categorized as a herb that "harmonizes" and is often included in formulas to help regulate the flow of qi and resolve alternating fever and chills, but also as a supporting herb in some formulas for respiratory complaints. The use of Bupleurum for "damp cough" is based on its reputed ability to help resolve internal imbalances and assist with the movement of stagnant qi, which in TCM theory can relieve phlegm and cough symptoms. However, while this traditional use is well documented in classic texts and modern TCM practice, scientific evidence specifically supporting Bupleurum for cough (especially "damp cough") is limited. Some laboratory studies have explored Bupleurum's anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating activities, but these do not directly validate its use for cough. Therefore, its use for this indication is primarily justified by tradition, with little robust clinical evidence from modern research.
