Evidence supporting the use of: Amomum subulatum
For the health condition: Cough (damp)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Amomum subulatum, commonly known as black cardamom, is traditionally used in various systems of medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), to address respiratory conditions such as coughs that are associated with "dampness"—a TCM concept referring to the accumulation of fluids or phlegm in the body. In these traditional contexts, A. subulatum is believed to possess warm and aromatic properties that help to "dry dampness" and "transform phlegm," thereby alleviating symptoms like cough, congestion, and chest tightness. Several classical herbal formulas include black cardamom as an ingredient for respiratory complaints with a damp component. However, scientific studies specifically validating its efficacy for cough, particularly cough characterized by "dampness," are limited. Most available research focuses on its antioxidant, antimicrobial, and general anti-inflammatory properties, with only indirect relevance to cough relief. Therefore, while its use for "damp cough" is justified by longstanding traditional practice, the scientific evidence supporting this application remains weak and largely inferential.
