Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bacopa monnieri (sometimes just called bacopa) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine, primarily as a nootropic (cognitive enhancer) and adaptogen. In traditional systems, bacopa is believed to help the body adapt to stress and support mental clarity, which indirectly relates to the body's stress response systems, including those involving cortisol. However, there is limited direct historical reference to bacopa being used specifically for "cortisol" regulation, as the hormone itself was not characterized in traditional medicine.
Modern scientific research has begun to explore bacopa’s effects on the stress response. Some animal and limited human studies suggest that bacopa may help reduce stress and anxiety, which can have downstream effects on cortisol levels. For example, a few studies have shown that bacopa supplementation can reduce stress and improve cognitive function in healthy adults, but these studies often measure subjective stress or mood rather than directly measuring changes in cortisol levels. There is insufficient high-quality clinical evidence to conclusively state that bacopa directly supports healthy cortisol balance in humans. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition, the scientific validation for bacopa’s effect specifically on the cortisol system is weak and indirect.
