Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamin D (cholecalciferol) is scientifically used to support convalescence, particularly in the context of restoring overall health after illness, surgery, or periods of immobility. During convalescence, individuals are at increased risk of vitamin D deficiency due to limited sun exposure, poor dietary intake, or impaired absorption. Scientific studies have demonstrated that vitamin D plays a crucial role in bone health, muscle function, immune modulation, and the prevention of secondary complications such as infections and falls. A deficiency in vitamin D during recovery may delay wound healing, increase susceptibility to infections, and contribute to muscle weakness, all of which can impede recovery. Supplementation with vitamin D during convalescence has been shown in clinical trials to improve muscle strength, reduce risk of falls, and enhance overall recovery, particularly in older adults or those with pre-existing deficiency (Annals of Clinical Biochemistry, 2013; JAMA, 2015). However, while there is moderate scientific evidence for its benefit in specific populations (e.g., elderly, malnourished, or immobilized patients), evidence is less robust in otherwise healthy individuals recovering from mild illnesses. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation during convalescence is generally justified scientifically when deficiency is suspected or confirmed, or when risk factors are present.
