Evidence supporting the use of: Sea Buckthorn
For the health condition: Convalescence
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has a long history of use in traditional systems of medicine, particularly in Tibetan, Mongolian, and Russian folk medicine, for supporting recovery during periods of convalescence. The berries, seeds, and oil are rich in vitamins (notably vitamin C and E), flavonoids, carotenoids, and essential fatty acids, which are believed to help restore strength and improve general vitality after illness. Historically, Sea Buckthorn has been administered as a tonic to promote healing, support immune function, and enhance overall nutritional status during recuperation.
While there is some preclinical and limited clinical research suggesting Sea Buckthorn may have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-repair properties, direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for convalescence in humans is lacking or preliminary. Most modern uses for convalescence are based on its nutrient profile and traditional applications rather than robust clinical trials. Therefore, its use for this purpose is mainly justified by tradition, with the evidence base being modest and indirect.
