Evidence supporting the use of: D-Ribose
For the health condition: Convalescence
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
D-Ribose is a naturally occurring pentose sugar that plays a key role in the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the primary energy carrier in cells. Its use in supporting convalescence (recovery after illness, surgery, or trauma) is grounded in the hypothesis that cellular energy depletion is a limiting factor in recovery, and that supplemental D-ribose may help replenish ATP stores more rapidly. Several small clinical studies and animal experiments have shown that D-ribose supplementation can accelerate ATP synthesis, particularly in myocardial (heart) tissue following ischemia or injury. For example, research in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia has suggested modest improvements in energy, sleep, and well-being with D-ribose supplementation. However, high-quality evidence in the context of general convalescence is lacking. The majority of clinical trials focus on cardiac recovery or specific fatigue-related disorders, not broad recovery from illness or surgery. There is a plausible biochemical rationale for use, and limited clinical evidence suggests benefit in select populations, but large, well-designed trials specifically evaluating D-ribose in convalescence are not available. Therefore, while some scientific validation exists, the overall evidence supporting D-ribose for general convalescence remains limited and preliminary.
