Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hedyotis, particularly Hedyotis diffusa (also known as Oldenlandia diffusa), has been used in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for a variety of ailments, including "contagious diseases." In TCM, Hedyotis is considered to clear heat and toxins, which are often conceptualized as underlying factors in contagious or febrile diseases. However, the majority of uses for Hedyotis in TCM relate to its purported anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and anticancer properties, with its application to infectious or contagious diseases being more indirectly inferred from its general use for "heat toxin" conditions.
From a scientific standpoint, there is limited evidence directly supporting the efficacy of Hedyotis for treating contagious diseases in humans. Some in vitro and animal studies have indicated that extracts from Hedyotis species possess antibacterial, antiviral, and immunomodulatory effects. However, these findings do not equate to clinical validation for treating contagious diseases in humans, as robust, well-controlled human trials are lacking. Thus, while its use is rooted in traditional practice and there are some promising preclinical findings, the evidence base is not strong enough to support its use for this indication based on scientific standards.
