Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Thymus satureioides, also known as "Zaitra" or "Savory Thyme," is a plant traditionally used in North African and Mediterranean herbal medicine. Its use for conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva, commonly called "pink eye") is primarily based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In Moroccan traditional medicine, for example, decoctions or infusions of Thymus satureioides are sometimes applied as eye washes or compresses to help reduce eye irritation and inflammation, including conjunctivitis. The rationale behind this use is likely due to the plant's documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro, which are attributed to its essential oils (notably thymol and carvacrol).

However, there is a lack of direct clinical studies or scientific trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of Thymus satureioides specifically for conjunctivitis in humans. Most available research focuses on the plant’s general antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, not its ophthalmic applications. Consequently, while there is an established tradition of its use for eye conditions in some cultures, this practice has not been validated by modern scientific research. The evidence supporting its effectiveness for conjunctivitis is therefore rated as very weak.
