Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Serum, specifically autologous serum eye drops, is scientifically validated as a treatment option for certain types of conjunctivitis, particularly those that are severe, chronic, or refractory to standard therapy. Autologous serum is derived from the patient’s own blood and contains growth factors, vitamins, and immunoglobulins that are similar to those found in natural tears. These components are believed to promote healing of the ocular surface and provide anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits.

Several clinical studies and case reports have demonstrated the efficacy of autologous serum eye drops in improving symptoms and signs of severe conjunctivitis, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, and persistent allergic conjunctivitis. The evidence is strongest for cases where conventional lubricants and anti-inflammatory medications have failed. A 2014 review in the journal Ocular Surface highlighted the beneficial effects of serum eye drops in various ocular surface diseases, including conjunctivitis, due to their ability to enhance epithelial healing and reduce inflammation.

While autologous serum is not a first-line therapy for uncomplicated viral or bacterial conjunctivitis, its use is scientifically supported for more complex or chronic cases, especially those with significant surface damage or delayed healing. The overall evidence base is moderate to strong (rated 4/5), with increasing adoption in specialized ophthalmic practice.
