For the health condition: Conjunctivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha and related species) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and Asia. Historically, liverwort was believed to benefit liver ailments due to the "Doctrine of Signatures," but it was also used topically for various inflammatory conditions, including eye irritations such as conjunctivitis ("pink eye"). Folk remedies sometimes involved applying poultices or infusions to the affected eye. However, there is little to no modern scientific research validating the efficacy or safety of liverwort for conjunctivitis. Most references to its use come from historical herbals and ethnobotanical texts rather than controlled studies or pharmacological investigations. No specific active constituents of liverwort have been proven to benefit conjunctival inflammation or infection, and authoritative medical sources do not recommend it as a treatment. The evidence supporting its use for conjunctivitis is therefore weak and relies almost entirely on historical usage rather than contemporary scientific validation.
