Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flavonoid glycosides are a class of plant-derived polyphenolic compounds known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Their use in the management of conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva) has some scientific basis, primarily from in vitro and animal studies. Research indicates that flavonoid glycosides, such as those found in plants like Euphrasia officinalis (eyebright) and Ginkgo biloba, can inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory mediators and reduce oxidative stress in ocular tissues. For example, studies have demonstrated that quercetin glycosides can decrease histamine release and modulate immune responses in models of allergic conjunctivitis. However, the majority of available evidence is preclinical, with few well-conducted human clinical trials directly evaluating the efficacy of flavonoid glycosides in treating conjunctivitis. While some small-scale human studies and traditional uses support their application for eye inflammation, the evidence remains limited and not robust enough for strong clinical recommendation. As such, the scientific evidence is emerging but not definitive, justifying a moderate-low rating of 2 out of 5. Further high-quality clinical research is needed to establish the safety and efficacy of flavonoid glycosides specifically for conjunctivitis.
