Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bee propolis has a long history of use in various traditional medicine systems for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Its application in the context of eye conditions, such as conjunctivitis (also known as "pink eye"), stems largely from these traditional uses. Historically, propolis has been used as a topical remedy for wounds and infections, and its use has sometimes extended to eye ailments in folk medicine, particularly in Eastern Europe and parts of Asia. However, while there is laboratory evidence that propolis possesses antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties, clinical studies specifically assessing its efficacy for conjunctivitis in humans are very limited. Most available evidence comes from in vitro studies or animal models, and not from robust, placebo-controlled clinical trials in humans. Therefore, while the rationale for its use in conjunctivitis is based on traditional applications and some supportive basic research, scientific validation for its safety and effectiveness in treating conjunctivitis in humans is currently weak. More high-quality clinical studies are needed before bee propolis can be recommended as a standard treatment for conjunctivitis.
