Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Baccharoides anthelmintica (syn. Vernonia anthelmintica) has a documented history of use in various traditional systems of medicine, particularly Ayurveda and Siddha. In these traditions, its seeds, commonly referred to as "Kalijiri," have been used for a variety of ailments, including as an external application for eye disorders such as conjunctivitis. The seeds are sometimes ground and made into pastes or infusions that are applied to the eyes to relieve symptoms like redness and irritation.

However, there is very limited direct scientific research validating these traditional uses specifically for conjunctivitis. Most studies on Baccharoides anthelmintica focus on its anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties in vitro or in animal models, rather than direct clinical trials in humans for eye conditions. The traditional rationale for its use may be partly due to its presumed antimicrobial activity, which could, in theory, help with infectious conjunctivitis, but this has not been directly demonstrated in robust scientific studies.

Thus, while the plant is used in traditional medicine for conjunctivitis, the evidence supporting this use is weak and largely anecdotal, lacking rigorous clinical validation. Its rating reflects a recognition of tradition but a lack of strong, direct evidence.
