Evidence supporting the use of: Dissolved Oxygen
For the health condition: Congestive Heart Failure
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Dissolved Oxygen (administered as supplemental oxygen therapy) is scientifically validated for use in managing patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) who are hypoxemic (have abnormally low blood oxygen levels). CHF often leads to pulmonary congestion and impaired gas exchange, resulting in reduced oxygen saturation. The primary goal of supplemental oxygen therapy in this context is to increase arterial oxygen content, alleviate symptoms of breathlessness, and reduce the workload on the heart by ensuring adequate oxygen delivery to tissues. Clinical guidelines (such as those from the American Heart Association and European Society of Cardiology) recommend oxygen for CHF patients experiencing hypoxemia (typically SpO2 < 90%). Multiple studies have shown that oxygen administration in hypoxemic CHF patients can improve symptoms and sometimes survival. However, there is limited evidence for benefit in patients with normal oxygen saturation, and routine use in non-hypoxemic CHF is not recommended. In summary, supplemental dissolved oxygen is an evidence-based, frontline supportive therapy for CHF patients with low blood oxygen, but its use should be guided by documented hypoxemia and not applied indiscriminately.
