Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Litsea cubeba, commonly known as May Chang, has traditionally been used in some Asian systems of medicine and folk practices for its aromatic and purported therapeutic properties. In the context of sinus congestion, its essential oil—rich in citral—has been used historically for its perceived decongestant and antimicrobial effects, primarily via inhalation or topical application in diluted form. The rationale for its use is rooted in the strong, lemony aroma, which is believed to help open airways and provide symptomatic relief from nasal blockage. However, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence or high-quality scientific studies specifically validating Litsea’s efficacy in treating sinus congestion in humans. Most supporting claims are anecdotal or based on the general effects of inhaling aromatic essential oils, which may temporarily relieve perception of congestion but do not address underlying causes. While the oil possesses some demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro, there is insufficient direct scientific research connecting these properties to real-world sinus congestion relief. Therefore, its use for this purpose remains primarily traditional, with limited empirical support.
