Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Houttuynia cordata, known as fish mint or "yu xing cao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has long been used in East Asian herbal practices for respiratory issues, including sinus congestion. In TCM, it is believed to have "heat-clearing" and "detoxifying" properties, making it a common ingredient in formulations intended to relieve symptoms of upper respiratory tract infections, such as nasal congestion, sinusitis, and cough. Preparations often involve decoctions or teas made from the aerial parts of the plant.

However, modern scientific validation for its efficacy in treating sinus congestion is limited. Some laboratory studies suggest that Houttuynia cordata has anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antibacterial properties, which could theoretically help with respiratory symptoms, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Most of the current evidence remains anecdotal or is based on traditional use rather than rigorous clinical investigation. As such, its use for sinus congestion is primarily justified by tradition, with minimal scientific support at present.
