Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons, and limes, have a long history of use in traditional medicine for supporting respiratory health, including the relief of sinus congestion. The use is primarily based on anecdotal evidence and traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, flavonoids, and essential oils, which are believed to support immune function and may have mild anti-inflammatory effects. In traditional remedies, citrus juices or hot drinks containing lemon are commonly consumed to soothe cold symptoms, including congestion. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating the effect of citrus on sinus congestion are lacking. While vitamin C has been studied for its potential to shorten the duration of the common cold, results are inconsistent, and its effect on nasal congestion specifically is minimal. The aroma of citrus essential oils may provide subjective relief through inhalation, but clinical evidence is scant and low quality. Therefore, while the traditional use of citrus for sinus congestion is widespread, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy is weak, with most benefits likely attributable to hydration, the placebo effect, or general immune support rather than a direct decongestant action.
