Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Raisintree (scientific name: Hovenia dulcis) has a long-standing use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Within traditional practice, various parts of the plant, especially the fruit and seeds, are used to "clear heat" and "detoxify," as well as to relieve symptoms of congestion and facilitate respiratory health. The historical use is primarily based on the TCM framework, where sinus congestion might be interpreted as an accumulation of "phlegm-heat" or "wind-heat" in the upper respiratory tract. Texts such as the Compendium of Materia Medica mention the fruit for its purported ability to alleviate symptoms linked to respiratory discomfort, including congestion. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented, there is limited modern clinical research directly examining the efficacy of Chinese Raisintree for sinus congestion. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective effects, but these do not specifically address sinus congestion. Therefore, the evidence for its use in treating sinus congestion remains largely traditional, with very limited scientific validation specific to this indication.
