Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chen pi (dried tangerine peel) is a well-known herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), primarily valued for its ability to regulate qi (energy flow), transform phlegm, and harmonize the middle burner (digestive system). In the context of sinus congestion, chen pi is traditionally used because it is believed to resolve "dampness" and "phlegm," which are considered underlying causes of congestion according to TCM theory. Formulations containing chen pi are commonly prescribed for symptoms such as nasal congestion, cough with phlegm, and a feeling of fullness in the chest.

However, while chen pi's use for respiratory and sinus issues is well-documented in classical TCM texts, direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for sinus congestion is limited. Some laboratory studies have identified that chen pi contains volatile oils, flavonoids, and other compounds that may have mild anti-inflammatory and expectorant effects, potentially helping with mucus clearance. Nevertheless, there are few, if any, rigorous clinical trials evaluating its effectiveness for sinus congestion in humans. The bulk of support for chen pi's use in this context remains rooted in traditional practice, not in modern scientific validation. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and supported by centuries of clinical use in TCM, the scientific evidence is weak, meriting a moderate evidence rating.
