Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has been traditionally used for a variety of respiratory complaints, including sinus congestion. In folk medicine, chamomile flowers are often used in steam inhalations intended to relieve nasal and sinus congestion, with the belief that their aromatic compounds and mild anti-inflammatory properties may help open airways and soothe irritated mucous membranes. However, while there is some in vitro and animal evidence that chamomile possesses anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial effects, there is limited direct scientific research specifically supporting chamomile’s efficacy for treating sinus congestion in humans. Most clinical studies involving chamomile focus on other uses, such as gastrointestinal complaints, sleep disorders, and skin inflammation. The traditional use of chamomile for congestion persists in herbal and alternative medicine practices, largely based on historical precedent rather than robust clinical evidence. Chamomile’s soothing properties may provide a subjective sense of relief during steam inhalation, but this is not the result of well-established or widely accepted scientific validation. Therefore, while chamomile is traditionally used in this context, the quality and quantity of evidence supporting its effectiveness for sinus congestion is limited.
