Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Herbal blends or combinations, often marketed for sinus congestion, have strong roots in traditional medicine. Many such blends incorporate ingredients like eucalyptus, peppermint, menthol, and camphor, which have a long history of use in folk remedies for respiratory discomfort. For example, inhalation of steam infused with these herbs or topical application of ointments containing these ingredients has been used for generations to help relieve symptoms of sinus congestion. The rationale in traditional practice is often based on the cooling, soothing, or aromatic properties of the ingredients, which are believed to open nasal passages or thin mucus.

While some individual ingredients in these blends, such as eucalyptus or menthol, have limited scientific evidence supporting their use for subjective relief of congestion (notably through the sensation of improved airflow), the efficacy of the blend as a whole is largely extrapolated from historical and anecdotal use. There is a lack of high-quality clinical trials evaluating most multi-ingredient blends specifically for sinus congestion. Therefore, while traditional use is strong, scientific validation is limited and evidence is generally considered to be weak to moderate, depending mostly on subjective improvement of symptoms rather than objective measures of congestion.
