Hedyotis, also known as Oldenlandia or by its botanical name Hedyotis diffusa, is a herb commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In TCM, it is reputed to "clear heat" and "resolve toxicity," and has been employed for conditions involving inflammation, swelling, and sometimes lymphatic congestion, though not necessarily using Western medical terminology. The traditional rationale is that Hedyotis may help dissipate accumulations and treat swellings, including those related to the lymphatic system such as abscesses or swollen glands. However, there is limited direct translation of these concepts into the modern understanding of lymphatic congestion.
Scientific evidence supporting the use of Hedyotis for lymphatic congestion is minimal. Most research focuses on its purported anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects, with studies often limited to in vitro or animal models. There is a lack of well-designed clinical trials investigating its efficacy or mechanism in directly treating or supporting lymphatic congestion in humans. Thus, while its use is anchored in traditional practice, robust scientific validation specific to lymphatic congestion is lacking.
