Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Alantolactone is a sesquiterpene lactone found in the roots of Inula helenium (elecampane), a herb traditionally used in European and Asian herbal medicine. Historical texts and folk medicine practices have used elecampane primarily as an expectorant for respiratory conditions such as coughs, bronchitis, and congestion. Some traditional herbalists have also suggested its potential to support "lymphatic drainage" or to "move stagnant fluids," though these claims are not well documented in authoritative herbal pharmacopoeias. There is limited scientific research directly evaluating alantolactone's effects on the lymphatic system or its ability to relieve lymphatic congestion. Most modern interest in alantolactone relates to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties demonstrated in preclinical studies, but not specifically for lymphatic congestion. Accordingly, while there is some basis in traditional herbalism for using elecampane (and by extension, alantolactone) for congestion in general, direct evidence—either traditional or scientific—for its use in lymphatic congestion is weak and largely anecdotal.
