Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arisaema, commonly known as "Jack-in-the-pulpit" or "tian nan xing" (天南星) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a longstanding history of use for respiratory conditions, including lung congestion, cough with phlegm, and other phlegmatic disorders. In TCM, Arisaema species (often Arisaema erubescens or Arisaema consanguineum) are processed (often with ginger) to reduce toxicity and then used to "transform phlegm" and reduce dampness, which are traditional concepts associated with lung congestion and productive cough. The root tuber is typically the medicinal part used. Historical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" mention its use for clearing phlegm from the lungs and alleviating related symptoms. However, modern scientific studies on Arisaema's efficacy for lung congestion are very limited, and most evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional practice without rigorous clinical trials. The plant contains potentially toxic compounds (notably calcium oxalate crystals), so it is always processed before medicinal use. In summary, the use of Arisaema for lung congestion is strongly rooted in traditional medicine systems, but lacks robust scientific validation at this time.
