Vietnamese sophora (Sophora flavescens), known in traditional medicine as "Khổ sâm," has a long history of use in East Asian herbalism, including Vietnamese and Chinese traditions. It is commonly used for a range of ailments, many of which are related to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Specifically for congestion (such as nasal or chest congestion), the use of Sophora flavescens is rooted primarily in traditional practices rather than modern scientific validation.

Traditional texts describe Sophora flavescens as a remedy for "clearing heat," "dispelling dampness," and "resolving toxins," which have been interpreted in some contexts as addressing symptoms like congestion. It is included in some multi-herb formulations aimed at respiratory complaints, although it is not considered a primary herb for this purpose compared to others like ephedra (Ma Huang) or licorice root.

Scientific studies on Sophora flavescens focus mainly on its effectiveness against parasites, bacteria, and as an anti-inflammatory agent, but there is little direct evidence supporting its use for congestion in the sense of mucus or airway obstruction. Thus, while its use for congestion is supported by tradition, the scientific evidence remains limited and indirect.
