Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora, chemotype 1,8-cineole) essential oil has a longstanding history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Madagascar and other regions where the plant is native. It is commonly used in aromatherapy and folk medicine to help alleviate respiratory congestion, often by inhalation or topical application. The primary rationale for its use is its high content of 1,8-cineole, a compound known for its mucolytic and mild anti-inflammatory properties. While there is some indirect scientific support for 1,8-cineole (as found in eucalyptus oil) in relieving symptoms of congestion, specific clinical trials evaluating Ravintsara oil itself are lacking. Most of the evidence for its use is therefore based on traditional practices and extrapolation from studies on similar cineole-rich oils. No major scientific bodies currently endorse Ravintsara as a primary treatment for congestion, but it remains a popular traditional remedy, especially in aromatherapy circles. Overall, while there is a plausible mechanism of action based on its constituents, robust scientific validation is limited.
