Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Peppermint essence, primarily composed of menthol, has a long history of use for relieving symptoms of nasal and respiratory congestion. The scientific support for this use is moderate. Menthol has been shown to produce a subjective sensation of improved airflow in the nasal passages, likely due to its action on cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors, which provide a cooling sensation and can make breathing feel easier. Several studies have confirmed this subjective benefit. For instance, a study published in the journal Chest (1996) found that while menthol did not objectively open nasal airways, it did subjectively improve the feeling of airflow in participants with nasal congestion.

However, it is important to note that the actual decongestant effect (i.e., physical reduction of nasal swelling or mucus) has not been robustly demonstrated in clinical trials. The evidence suggests that peppermint essence offers symptomatic relief rather than a true decongestant effect. Despite this, its use remains popular, and peppermint oil is a common ingredient in over-the-counter topical rubs for colds and congestion. In summary, while peppermint essence may not reduce congestion physiologically, scientific evidence supports its capacity to provide a sensation of relief, making its use for congestion partially justified by science.
