Galanga (Alpinia galanga), also known as greater galangal, has a long history of use in traditional Asian medicine, particularly in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for treating respiratory ailments such as congestion, cough, and colds. The rhizome is believed to possess warming, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory properties, which traditional healers have used to help clear mucus and ease breathing. However, scientific studies directly investigating galanga’s effectiveness for nasal or chest congestion in humans are limited. Some in vitro and animal research has indicated that galanga extracts may have anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, which could theoretically contribute to relieving respiratory symptoms. Nonetheless, these findings are preliminary and not specific to congestion relief. Overall, while traditional use as a remedy for congestion is well documented, there is only minimal scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for this particular indication. More robust clinical research is needed to validate traditional claims and determine the potential mechanisms of action in humans.
