Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Citrus nobilis, commonly known as mandarin orange, has a longstanding use in traditional medicine, particularly within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for supporting respiratory health and alleviating congestion. The dried peel of Citrus nobilis, or "Chen Pi," is often used in herbal formulas intended to regulate qi (energy), resolve phlegm, and ease symptoms of cough and chest congestion. Traditional practitioners believe its aromatic compounds help to "dry dampness" and clear mucus from the respiratory tract. However, despite its routine inclusion in TCM protocols and anecdotal support, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically validating the efficacy of Citrus nobilis peel for treating congestion. Some studies on related citrus peels (such as Citrus reticulata) have identified bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory and expectorant effects, but robust clinical trials on Citrus nobilis itself are lacking. Therefore, its use for congestion is primarily justified by traditional practices rather than by modern scientific research.
