Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Citrus (mixed) fruits, such as oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruits, have traditionally been used in various cultures as home remedies for congestion, especially in the context of colds and respiratory discomfort. The rationale behind their use is often linked to their high vitamin C content and their refreshing, sometimes mildly expectorant properties. Citrus peels, in particular, have been used in traditional Chinese medicine to help "move qi" and clear phlegm. However, the evidence supporting these traditional uses is limited and largely anecdotal.

From a scientific standpoint, while vitamin C has been studied for its potential to reduce the duration or severity of colds, there is little direct evidence that consuming citrus fruits or their extracts has a significant impact on nasal or chest congestion. Similarly, although citrus essential oils (such as lemon or orange oil) are sometimes used in aromatherapy for respiratory symptoms, rigorous clinical trials demonstrating efficacy for congestion are lacking. Therefore, the use of citrus for congestion is primarily driven by tradition rather than robust scientific validation, and the overall quality of evidence supporting its effectiveness for this specific condition is low.
