Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Citrus fruits, particularly lemon and orange, have a long-standing traditional use in supporting relief from congestion. This use is mainly rooted in folk and home remedies, where citrus juice or warm water with lemon and honey is consumed to soothe sore throats, loosen mucus, and provide comfort during colds or respiratory illnesses. The rationale behind this tradition is that citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C, which is believed to support immune function, and their tartness may stimulate saliva and thin mucus, making it easier to expel. Additionally, the aromatic oils in citrus peels are sometimes used in steam inhalation to help open nasal passages. However, scientific evidence directly supporting the effectiveness of citrus for treating congestion is limited. Some studies show marginal benefits of vitamin C in reducing the duration or severity of the common cold, but these effects are modest and not specific to congestion relief. There is currently no robust clinical evidence that citrus fruits provide significant or direct decongestant effects. Thus, while the use of citrus for congestion is widely supported by tradition, the scientific basis for this practice is weak and not definitive.
