Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cinnamic aldehyde, the main component of cinnamon oil, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. It has been used as a warming agent and sometimes included in remedies for respiratory discomfort, such as congestion. However, the traditional use is mostly based on the broader effects attributed to cinnamon or its preparations rather than to cinnamic aldehyde specifically. Scientifically, there is very limited direct evidence supporting cinnamic aldehyde as an effective treatment for congestion. Most available studies focus on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but not specifically on decongestant or mucolytic actions. Some in vitro studies suggest cinnamic aldehyde may inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and viruses associated with respiratory tract infections, but clinical data in humans are lacking. Therefore, its use for congestion is primarily justified by tradition, with little scientific validation or clinical support.
