Asafoetida (Ferula assa-foetida) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Unani, for the treatment of respiratory issues such as congestion, asthma, and bronchitis. The gum resin is often used in formulations intended to relieve chest congestion, coughs, and colds. Its expectorant properties are referenced in several historical texts, where it is described as helpful for clearing mucus from the respiratory tract. The traditional rationale is attributed to its pungent volatile oils and sulfur-containing compounds, which are believed to help loosen phlegm and facilitate its expulsion.

However, scientific research specifically validating asafoetida’s efficacy for respiratory congestion is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that asafoetida may have antispasmodic and bronchodilatory effects, and some limited antimicrobial activity, which could theoretically benefit respiratory ailments. Nevertheless, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its use for congestion is well-established in traditional practice, the scientific evidence remains preliminary and insufficient for strong endorsement.
