Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Alcohol has traditionally been used as a home remedy for congestion, especially in the form of hot toddies or alcoholic beverages mixed with other ingredients like honey and lemon. The historical rationale was that alcohol could act as a vasodilator, potentially widening blood vessels and providing a temporary sensation of warmth and relief from stuffiness. Additionally, the sedative effects of alcohol may have made sufferers feel more relaxed or helped them sleep despite discomfort.

However, there is very limited scientific evidence supporting alcohol’s efficacy for treating congestion. While alcohol may provide temporary subjective relief due to its warming and relaxing properties, it does not directly address the underlying causes of congestion, such as inflammation or mucus production. In fact, alcohol can dehydrate the body and, in some cases, worsen mucus viscosity. Reputable health sources and clinical guidelines do not recommend alcohol as a treatment for congestion, and excessive consumption can have negative health effects. Overall, alcohol’s use for congestion is based on tradition rather than robust scientific validation.
