Vitamin D is being explored for its potential role in supporting the recovery from concussions (mild traumatic brain injury, or mTBI), but the evidence remains preliminary. Several preclinical studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency may worsen outcomes after brain injury. Vitamin D has neuroprotective effects, including modulation of inflammation, support of neurotrophic factors, and reduction of oxidative stress, all of which may be relevant in the context of concussion recovery. In animal models, vitamin D supplementation has been shown to reduce neuronal damage and improve functional outcomes after brain injury.

Human data are limited and primarily observational. Some studies have found that individuals with concussions or TBI who are deficient in vitamin D may experience worse symptoms or slower recovery. However, there are currently very few controlled clinical trials directly testing vitamin D supplementation as a treatment for concussion. Expert consensus statements sometimes suggest screening for and correcting vitamin D deficiency in those with TBI as part of general health optimization, rather than as a specific evidence-based therapy for concussion itself.

In summary, while there is a plausible biological rationale and promising preclinical data, robust clinical evidence for vitamin D supplementation as a concussion treatment is lacking. The current use is driven by emerging science rather than tradition, and the strength of evidence supporting its use specifically for concussion is low to moderate.
