Evidence supporting the use of: Vitamin B9
For the health condition: Concentration (poor)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Vitamin B9, also known as folate or folic acid, is scientifically recognized as essential for healthy neurological function, as it plays a key role in the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and neurotransmitters. Several studies have explored the relationship between folate status and cognitive performance, including concentration. Research indicates that folate deficiency can result in neurological symptoms such as cognitive impairment, confusion, and, in severe cases, dementia. Some observational studies have suggested that individuals with low folate levels may experience poorer attention and concentration, particularly in older adults. Interventional studies supplementing folic acid have shown mixed results: while folic acid supplementation can improve cognitive symptoms in individuals with folate deficiency or certain populations (such as the elderly), there is limited evidence that supplementation improves concentration in healthy, non-deficient individuals. The strongest evidence for benefit is in the correction of deficiency states, not general enhancement of concentration. In summary, Vitamin B9 is scientifically validated as necessary for cognitive health and may help concentration when deficiency is present, but robust evidence supporting its use to treat or enhance concentration in individuals with adequate folate status is limited.
