Teacrine (theacrine) is a purine alkaloid structurally similar to caffeine, found naturally in certain teas and fruits. Its purported cognitive-enhancing properties, particularly for concentration and attention, have been explored in several small-scale studies. The evidence supporting Teacrine for improving concentration is limited but present. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials in healthy adults have shown that single doses of Teacrine (100-200 mg) can lead to modest improvements in subjective measures of mental energy, focus, and motivation compared to placebo. Objective measures of cognitive performance, such as reaction time and task accuracy, have shown inconsistent benefits, with some studies reporting small improvements and others finding no significant effect. Teacrine's mechanism is thought to involve modulation of adenosine and dopamine signaling, similar to caffeine, but with less impact on blood pressure and tolerance development. While these findings suggest a potential benefit for concentration, the small sample sizes, short duration of studies, and predominant use of healthy, young subjects limit the generalizability and strength of the evidence. There is currently insufficient high-quality data to support Teacrine as a robust treatment for poor concentration. Further research in larger, diverse populations and over longer periods is needed to establish its efficacy and safety profile for this use.
